Nicosia, December 8, 2025 (TAK):  Plastic grocery bags will be prohibited from January 1st.

The Department of Environmental Protection issued a statement saying shops will be banned from selling or giving away plastic grocery bags with thicknesses ranging from 15-30 microns. The law will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu stated that pollution caused by microplastics worldwide had reached its highest level; therefore, urgent and effective measures needed to be taken.
