Kenan Atakol, one of the longest-serving Turkish Cypriot MP has died
Nicosia, January 6, 2026 (TAK): Kenan Atakol, a long-serving minister and MP in both the Turkish Cypriot Federated State and the TRNC, has died at 88.
After graduating with a degree in civil engineering from Middle East Technical University, Atakol began his professional career working for the Turkish Cypriot Administration. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the design phases of the Morphou-Tillirga Irrigation Project, a major initiative carried out under the United Nations Development Programme.
He held several key ministerial positions in the Turkish Cypriot Federated State and the TRNC.
Kenan Atakol served as a member of parliament from June 20, 1976, until December 18, 1998, winning every election during that period.
Atakol, a founding member of the TRNC, held various ministerial positions, including Natural Resources and Energy, Education and Culture, Internal Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Defence, and Tourism, from 1974 to 1993.
